Idea 8of 24Builds onSplit the parts: same amount, new name

Multiply the top and bottom by the same number

How do you make an equivalent fraction without drawing it?

Today you'll discover

  • why both numbers change together
  • why adding does not work
  • how to go back the other way

Think firstRavi splits every fourth into 3 equal parts

What does 3/4 become?

Decide first, then press Next. Watch both numbers change together.

A strip in fourths with three shaded, above a strip in twelfths. The parts are counted, then the two are shown equal. Then a strip in eighths and one in fourths, 6/8 and 3/4, are shown equal. The last step shows strips for 2/5, 4/7 and 4/10.

The big idea

Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number to make an equivalent fraction.

Compare themMultiply: 2/5 with × 2 on top and bottom is 4/10, the same amount. Add: 2 more on top and bottom is 4/7, a bigger amount.

Going backDivide both by the same number: 6/8 is 3/4 (÷ 2), and 9/12 is 3/4 (÷ 3).
