Where fractions live

Idea 6of 24Builds onTop number, bottom numberCompare fractions of the same whole

Split the parts: same amount, new name

Can two different fractions be the same amount?

Today you'll discover

  • what splitting every part does
  • why 1/2 and 2/4 are equal
  • what equivalent means

Think firstThree strips the same length

Which strip has the most shaded?

Decide first, then press Next. Look where each shaded part stops.

Three strips of the same length, in halves, fourths and eighths, each shaded halfway. The shaded parts are counted, then named, then a dashed line shows they all stop at the same place. The last step shows a strip in thirds above a strip in sixths.

The big idea

Equivalent fractions name the same amount: splitting every part changes the name, not the amount.

On fraction strips1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 = 5/10 = 6/12: all of them end halfway along the strip.

Easy to get wrongMore parts does not mean more. 4/8 has more parts than 1/2, but each part is smaller.

Key word
