Fractions that make one whole

When is a fraction exactly 1?

Today you'll discover

  • why 5/5 is 1
  • how to write 2 as a fraction
  • how many thirds fill 3 pies

Think firstThree strips, every part shaded

Which fraction names the middle strip?

Decide first, then press Next. Compare the top number with the bottom one.

Three strips fully shaded, cut into thirds, fifths and eighths. Their names are written, then all are shown equal to 1. Then two whole strips in fourths, all shaded, with a bracket over each whole. The last step shows three pies cut into thirds.

The big idea

When the numerator equals the denominator, the fraction is 1 whole: 4/4 = 1.

Many names for 11 = 2/2 = 3/3 = 4/4 … = 12/12. Any fraction with the same top and bottom fills one whole.

Easy to get wrongA whole cut into 5 parts, all shaded, is 5/5, not 1/5. 1/5 is only one of the parts.
