Idea 9of 23Builds onHundredths: each tenth cut into 10
A zero at the end changes nothing
Is 0.50 more than 0.5?
Today you'll discover
- why 0.5 and 0.50 shade the same part
- how tenths turn into hundredths
- when a zero can be added
Think first0.5 of a whole, shaded
Is 0.50 more than 0.5?
Decide first, then press Next. Compare how much of the square is shaded.
A square marked 1 whole, 5 of its 10 strips shaded, with 0.5 written beside it. Then the same square cut into 100 small squares with 50 shaded: 0.50, covering the same 5 strips. Then 5 tenths = 50 hundredths, and 0.50 = 50/100. The last step shows 70 small squares shaded.

The big idea
0.5 and 0.50 are equivalent decimals: the same amount, because 5 tenths are 50 hundredths.
One amount, many names
3.2 and 3.20 are equal. So are 0.1 and 0.10. The extra zero only says “and no hundredths”.
- Tenths3.2
- Hundredths3.20
Where it goes nextWriting two numbers to the same place, like 0.40 and 0.35, makes them easy to compare. That is the next idea.
Key word
- equivalent decimals
- decimals that name the same amount, like 0.5 and 0.50
Ready to use it?
- Write a tenth as hundredths.
- Pick the decimals that are equal.
