Idea 1of 15Builds onSlide a point

Slide every corner

How do you slide a whole shape without guessing?

Today you'll discover

  • which points of a shape to move
  • how to draw the new shape
  • what stays the same after a slide

Think firstSlide the triangle 1 left and 3 down

Corner A is at (1, 4). Where does it land?

Decide first, then press Next. Follow one corner, then check the others do the same.

A coordinate grid with a triangle whose corners are A (1, 4), B (3, 7) and C (6, 5). L-shaped arrows take each corner 1 left and 3 down to (0, 1), (2, 4) and (5, 2), and the new corners are joined into a green triangle the same size and facing the same way. The last step shows a square with corner A at (10, 4).

The big idea

To slide a shape, slide every vertex the same way, then join the new corners.

What stays, what changesA slide makes a congruent shape: same size, same shape, facing the same way. Only where it sits on the grid changes.

Easy to get wrongDo not move one corner and draw the rest by eye. Move every corner, then join them with a ruler.

Key words

vertex
a corner of a shape; more than one are vertices
congruent
the same size and the same shape

Ready to use it?

  • Write the coordinates of each corner of a shape.
  • Slide a shape and write its new corners.
