Slide a point
When a point slides, which of its numbers change?
Today you'll discover
- what right and left do to a point
- what up and down do to a point
- how to follow several slides in a row
Think firstA is at (6, 12). Slide it 5 right.
Where does A land after sliding 5 units right?
Decide first, then press Next. Watch which number in the list changes with each move.
A coordinate grid with A at (6, 12). Arrows follow its slides one at a time: 5 right to B at (11, 12), 7 down to C at (11, 5), 8 left to D at (3, 5), and 3 up to E at (3, 8). The list beside the grid grows with each point's coordinates.

The big idea
Sliding right or left changes the first number; up or down changes the second.
One move, one number
Each straight move changes just one of the two numbers.
- A(6, 12)
- 5 right(11, 12)
- 7 down(11, 5)
Easy to get wrong"4 left" means move 4 squares, not move to the line marked 4.
Key word
- translation
- a slide: every point moves the same distance in the same direction
Ready to use it?
- Slide a point and write its new coordinates.
- Follow a chain of slides, labelling each new point.
