Idea 7of 24Builds onNines from tens

Share out, or make groups

What two questions can a division answer?

Today you'll discover

  • how sharing deals things out
  • how grouping packs things up
  • why both are division

Think first8 friends share 48 stickers

8 friends share 48 stickers equally. How many does each friend get?

Decide first, then press Next. Ask: do I know the number of groups, or the size of each?

A pile of 48 dots. Circles for 8 friends appear and the dots move into them one round at a time until each holds 6, then 48 ÷ 8 = 6. Then 48 muffins are packed 6 to a box into 8 boxes, and 48 ÷ 6 = 8 with the check 8 × 6 = 48. The last step shows 60 apples and bags of 5.

The big idea

Division asks how many in each group, or how many groups there are.

Compare themSharing: 48 among 8 friends, how many each? Grouping: 48 in boxes of 6, how many boxes? Both are 48 ÷ something.

Easy to get wrongDividing whole numbers like these makes fewer: 60 ÷ 5 = 12 bags, far fewer bags than apples.
