A fence on three sides
How much fence do you need when a wall closes one side?
Today you'll discover
- which sides need fence
- how to take off the wall
- how to cost the fence
Think firstA garden against a 6 m wall
A wall closes one 6 m side. How much fence do the other three sides need?
Decide first, then press Next. Find the sides that are still open.
The 6 m by 4 m garden with a thick dark wall along its top side, marked no fence here. An orange fence line runs along the other three sides. Lines under it read Perimeter: 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 20 m and Fence: 20 − 6 for the wall = 14 m. The last step shows a pen 8 m by 3 m against a wall, with fence at $5 a metre.

The big idea
Fence only the open sides: the perimeter, minus any side a wall already closes.
For exampleGarden 6 m by 4 m against a wall: 4 + 6 + 4 = 14 m of fence, not 20 m.
Easy to get wrongTake off the side that is actually against the wall: a long side and a short side save different amounts.
Key word
- fencing
- the length of fence a job needs, measured in metres along the edge
