Carpet and baseboard for a room
A room needs carpet and baseboard. Which measure is which?
Today you'll discover
- what baseboard follows
- what carpet covers
- how to cost the carpet
Think firstA bedroom floor 5 m long and 4 m wide
Baseboard runs along the bottom of every wall. How much is needed?
Decide first, then press Next. Ask: along the walls, or across the floor?
A bedroom floor 5 m by 4 m on a grid. An orange line runs round the walls: 5 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 18 m of baseboard. Squares fill the floor in 4 rows of 5: 20 m² of carpet. A key shows one square as 1 m² and a short line as 1 m. The last step shows the L-shaped floor and asks what its carpet costs.

The big idea
Carpet covers the area of a floor; baseboard runs along its perimeter.
For exampleA 5 m by 4 m bedroom: 20 m² of carpet and 18 m of baseboard.
Easy to get wrongA real room has a door, where no baseboard goes. Take the door's width off the perimeter.
