Idea 3of 12Builds onA start line
Every metre counts
How far did she walk?
Today you'll discover
- a count that only ever goes up
- why walking back still adds
- the difference between two readouts
Think firstShe will walk six east, then six west
After that walk, how many metres has she walked in all?
Predict first. Then walk the figure east and back west, and watch the first readout.
A ground line with a flag at the start and a standing figure. After a prediction, two buttons walk the figure one metre east or one metre west, and two readouts under the picture update: the first counts every metre walked and only ever rises; the second says how far the figure is from the flag, and falls again when the figure walks back. Then Amara's walk is drawn with a thin bracket spanning twelve metres, and the last step asks how far the dog ran.

The big idea
Distance counts the whole trip, every metre, both ways.
See the patternWalk out six and back six and the first readout says twelve. Walking back never takes any of it away.
Easy to get wrongThe second readout is a different thing, and the next card is about it.
Key word
- distance
- the length of the whole path, every metre in every direction added up; a number with no direction
Ready to use it?
- Count the metres of a two-leg walk.
