Idea 21of 24Builds onDivide in friendly chunks

What is left over

What happens when the chunks do not use up every bit?

Today you'll discover

  • what a remainder is
  • why it is less than the divisor
  • how to write it with R

Think first250 ÷ 12: twenty 12s make 240

250 ÷ 12: twenty 12s make 240. What is the answer?

Decide first, then press Next. Check the leftover is less than the divisor.

The rectangle for 250 ÷ 12 with two parts of 10 × 12 = 120 and the column 250, 130, 10. Then a small dashed piece at the end marked 10 left, and the column ends 20 R10. The last step shows 500 ÷ 24.

The big idea

The remainder is what is left over, and it is always less than the divisor.

Easy to get wrongR10 is not .10: 20 R10 means 10 whole things left over, not one tenth.

For example250 pencils in boxes of 12: 20 full boxes, and 10 pencils left over.

Key word

remainder
what is left over when a number cannot be divided equally, written with R: 20 R10

Ready to use it?

  • Divide and write the remainder with R.
  • Check that a remainder is less than the divisor.
