Read the unit price on the shelf tag
What does the small price on a shelf tag tell you?
Today you'll discover
- the two prices on a tag
- how to check a tag
- tags that use different units
Think firstThe tag says $7.50 and $2.50 / 100 g
The trail mix tag shows $7.50 and $2.50 / 100 g. What does the $2.50 tell you?
Decide first, then press Next. Find the small box at the right of the tag.
A 300 g bag of trail mix with a yellow tag: $7.50 large on the left, 300 g under it, and a small box on the right showing $2.50 / 100 g. Then a bar cut into 3 parts of 100 g, $7.50 ÷ 3 = $2.50, and the check 3 × $2.50 = $7.50. The last step shows two cheese tags, one per 100 g and one per kg.

The big idea
A shelf tag shows the price and the unit price; compare the unit prices.
Reading a tag
Big number: what you pay for the bag. Small box: the price for each 100 g, kilogram, litre or item.
- Price$7.50
- Amount300 g
- Unit price$2.50 / 100 g
Easy to get wrongStores do not always use the same unit on every tag. $9.90 / kg and $1.10 / 100 g cannot be compared as they are.
