Percent off is a fraction off
How do you work out 50%, 25% or 10% off a price?
Today you'll discover
- which fraction each percent is
- how to cut a price into parts
- what you pay after
Think firstAn $18.00 hoodie, 50% off
The hoodie is 50% off. What fraction of the price is 50%?
Decide first, then press Next. Turn the percent into a fraction, then cut the price bar.
A plain tag, $18.00 for the hoodie, beside an orange tag: 50% off, 50% is one half. Then a bar of the price cut into 2 equal parts of $9.00, one part struck out: $9.00 off. Then a $12.00 puzzle at 25% off, its bar cut into 4 parts of $3.00, one struck out, and $12.00 − $3.00 = $9.00 to pay. The last step asks about a $35.00 backpack at 10% off.

The big idea
50% off is one half off, 25% is one quarter, 10% is one tenth.
Percent to fraction
50% = 50 out of 100 = one half. 25% = one quarter. 10% = one tenth.
- 50%÷ 2
- 25%÷ 4
- 10%÷ 10
