Spinner Lab

Idea 1of 22

Outcomes and events

What can happen when you spin a spinner?

Today you'll discover

  • what an outcome is
  • what an event is
  • how one event can hold several outcomes

Think firstA spinner with four equal sections

How many different results can one spin of this spinner give?

Decide first, then press Next. Name every place the pointer could stop.

A round spinner of four equal sections marked O for orange, B for blue, G for green and Y for yellow, with a pointer. The outcomes are listed across the top; then the orange and green sections are outlined and named as the event, 2 of the 4 outcomes. The last step shows a spinner numbered 1 to 6.

The big idea

An outcome is one possible result; an event is the outcomes you care about.

Other outcomesA coin has 2 outcomes: heads or tails. A number cube has 6: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6.

Easy to get wrongList every outcome before you count. “Not orange” is not one outcome; it hides blue, green and yellow.
