Idea 8of 22Builds onThe median: the middle value in order

Put decimals in order by place value

Is 1.25 bigger than 1.4?

Today you'll discover

  • how to order decimals
  • the median of decimal data

Think firstThree long jumps: 1.5, 1.25, 1.4 m

What is the median jump?

Decide first, then press Next. Compare the tenths digit of each box.

A row of three boxes, 1.5, 1.25 and 1.4, slides into order: 1.25, 1.4, 1.5. Then 1.25 and 1.5 are crossed off and 1.4 is ringed as the median. The last step shows five ribbon lengths.

The big idea

To find a decimal median, order by place value: compare tenths before hundredths.

Easy to get wrongMore digits does not mean bigger. 1.25 has more digits than 1.4, but 2 tenths is less than 4 tenths.

Same placeWrite 1.5, 1.25 and 1.4 as 1.50, 1.25 and 1.40. Then compare them like whole numbers of hundredths.
