From Every Side

Idea 2of 22Builds onA view shows one side, drawn flat

The front view: the tallest in each column

How tall is each column when you look from the front?

Today you'll discover

  • what the front view shows
  • why a stack behind can still show
  • how to read a front view's columns

Think firstA stack of 3 stands behind a stack of 2

From the front, how many squares tall is the left column?

Decide first, then press Next. Look along each column of cubes from the front to the back.

Seven cubes from a corner, with each stack's height printed on top: 2, 1 and 1 at the front and 3 behind the left end. Then the front view: columns 3, 1 and 1 squares tall, with the heights printed above them. The last step asks about ten cubes in two rows.

The big idea

Each column of the front view is as tall as the tallest stack in it.

Easy to get wrongA tall stack behind a short one still shows: its top part rises over. A short stack behind a tall one vanishes from the front view.

For exampleFront row 2, 1, 1 with a 3 behind the left: the front view is 3, 1, 1. The 3 behind wins the left column.
