Idea 3of 24Builds onTop number, bottom number
A fraction of a group of things
How do you find 2/3 of 12 eggs?
Today you'll discover
- how a group can be the whole
- why the bottom number makes equal groups
- how many the top number takes
Think firstA carton of 12 eggs: 2/3 are brown
How many of the 12 eggs are brown?
Decide first, then press Next. Make equal groups before you count.
Twelve eggs in two rows. They slide into three loops of four eggs each; then two loops are filled in and 4 + 4 = 8 is written. The last step shows sixteen students to put in four groups.

The big idea
To find a fraction of a set, make equal groups, then count the groups you take.
More sets1/2 of a dozen eggs: 2 equal groups of 6, so 6 eggs. 3/5 of 10 apples: 5 groups of 2, take 3 groups: 6 apples.
Easy to get wrongThe top number is not how many things. In 2/3 of 12, the 2 counts groups, and each group holds 4 eggs.
