Idea 3of 13Builds onPlot a point
A zero puts it on an axis
Where is a point when one of its numbers is 0?
Today you'll discover
- what (0, 7) means
- what (6, 0) means
- which part of the grid we use
Think firstThree points: P, Q and R
Point P sits on the line up the side. What are its coordinates?
Decide first, then press Next. Check which place the 0 is in.
A coordinate grid with three points: P on the line up the left side at 7, Q on the bottom line at 6, and R at 6 across and 7 up. One at a time their coordinates are written beside the grid: P (0, 7), Q (6, 0), R (6, 7).

The big idea
0 across puts a point on the y-axis; 0 up puts it on the x-axis.
The first quadrantOn this grid both numbers are 0 or more, so every point is up and to the right of the origin.
Easy to get wrong(0, 7) and (7, 0) are on different axes. Which place the 0 is in tells you which line.
Key word
- first quadrant
- the part of a grid where both coordinates are 0 or more: up and to the right of the origin
Ready to use it?
- Write the coordinates of points on the axes.
- Say which axis a point with a 0 sits on.
