A scale counts in equal steps

How do you read a bar that stops between two lines?

Today you'll discover

  • how a scale counts up
  • what the interval is
  • how to read halfway between lines

Think firstGrade 3's bar stops between two lines

How many cans did Grade 3 collect?

Decide first, then press Next. Read the scale's step before you read a bar.

A bar graph of cans collected for the food bank by Grades 2 to 5, with a scale of 0 to 50 counting by 10s. The scale's steps are marked plus 10; a dashed line runs from the top of the Grade 3 bar across to the scale halfway between 30 and 40, labelled 35. The last step shows a recess graph whose scale counts by 2s.

The big idea

A scale counts up in equal steps; the size of one step is the interval.

Reading between linesHalfway between two lines is half a step. On a scale by 10s, halfway between 30 and 40 is 35.

Easy to get wrongCheck the step before you read a bar. A scale by 2s and a scale by 10s can look exactly alike.

Key words

scale
the numbers along a graph's side, counting up in equal steps
interval
the size of one step on a scale, like 10 in 0, 10, 20, 30
