A metre stick counts in hundredths
How can a metre stick show tenths and hundredths?
Today you'll discover
- what part of a metre 1 cm is
- what 0.8 m is in centimetres
- how to tell which tenth a mark is near
Think firstA metre stick: 100 centimetres
A metre has 100 cm. What part of a metre is 1 cm?
Decide first, then press Next. Read centimetres above the stick and metres below.
A metre stick with centimetres 0 to 100 above it. Then values 0.1 m to 1.0 m appear under every 10 cm. Then the first centimetres are enlarged: 1 cm = 0.01 m. Then an arrow marks 0.32 m = 32 cm, with 2 cm to 30 cm and 8 cm to 40 cm, and 0.3 m ringed. The last step marks 67 cm.

The big idea
On a metre stick, 10 cm is a tenth of a metre and 1 cm is a hundredth.
Same length, two units
80 cm is 0.8 m. 32 cm is 0.32 m. 5 cm is 0.05 m.
- 80 cm0.8 m
- 32 cm0.32 m
- 5 cm0.05 m
Easy to get wrong5 cm is 0.05 m, not 0.5 m. 0.5 m is half the stick: 50 cm.
